The name "Chhinnamasta" is compound of two words: the first is "Chhinna" meaning isolated and "Masta" meaning head. Thus, Chhinnamasta is the one who is without head or a severed head. She severed her head by own and hold in one hand, as a symbol of self sacrificing. She is also known with other names like Chhinnamastika Prachanda Chandika. Her appearance is fully different form other Goddess, as a fearsome, awful or furious aspect of of divine mother, among Ten Maha-Vidyas. Character wise, She combines all the three Gunas, namely, "Satwa, Rajas and Tamo", and hence is well known as "Trigunmayee" (one who have all three types of natural properties or Gunas). She represents the change of cycle in the Universe. Everything that is in the Universe is related to this cycle. When the deterioration is more than the creation, it causes her prominence and the process is reversed and once again,creation is more than deterioration. She is also famous by her another name called "Vajra-Vairochiynea" because of legendary demons Hiranyakashyap, Vaiorchan etc. Adoration of Goddess Chhinnamasta, and her existence can also be found in Jainism and Buddhism. In Buddhism she is known as Chhinnamunda Vajravarahi. She indicates towards an eternal truth that, life is nourished by death and life, death and sex is inter-related with each other and the ultimate destiny of sexual desire is to perpetuate more life. She is a symbol of self-control, control over ever-growing desire,which must be achieved before undertaking successful yogic practice. She represents the control of desire during Yogic practice and the suppression of sexual lust.

She is standing on a copulating couple, her head is severed form her body and showing in his one hand. As, she is represent the principles of self-control over coming desire. She is most important in Yogic scholars or who are practicing to get the natural energy called "Kundalini" or a hidden natural power of human body. To become a perfect Yogi or a perfection in yoga, there is a principle to get rid with all kind of over desire, it's should be balanced. As if the creation is more and destruction is less or destruction is more and creation is less, then its creates a critical situation. Coming desire and fulfillment of desire is normal in human life, but if we say about the over coming desire, which take in wrong decision is not well and some times it's take to end of everything. Human being is only wit to think and understand, this property isolated human with all other living being. So, not only in Yogic practice or who want to attain Mokha, salvation or liberation, this principle apply on normal life of human being and the creator, destroyer and the sustain-er of the worlds also. She represents the self sacrificing principle with over come desire. As she sacrifice herself, by isolation of her head with body with her sword and present the reality of how dangerous it's could be, if over come desire is not controlled. She is considered as both symbol of self control on sexual desire as well as an embodiment of sexual energy.

Physical appearance of Goddess Chhinnamasta

She is naked with disheveled hair and stands in an aggressive manner, with her leg stretched towards Kamdeva (he is the god of sexual desire in males) and his wife Rati (Kamdeva's wife "desire of sexual lust in females and intercourse") who are engaged in joyful sexual intercourse, both are lying at the center of a red lotus which appears like the diskette of the sun,with her two cummers or two 'Yoginies' (females scholars of tantra and yoga), named "Jaya and Vijaya" or "Dakini or Varnini". She is appearing as a sixteen years old girl with full Breasts, mostly in yellow or reddish yellow color. She wears a garland of human skulls and ornaments made of snakes,on her head is a crown consisting of precious gems and diamonds, she has three eyes and bears a crescent moon on her forehead, she holds her self severed head in her right hand and a sword, with which she has severed her own head, in her left hand. She drinks her own blood which gushes out of her headless body with her own gaping mouth. Her cummers also happily drink the blood that flows out of her headless body. Both of them are wearing garlands of human skulls, Human bones and their sacred thread and ornaments are made of serpents; they stand with their hair let lose and each of them hold a bowl made of human skull and a sword in their hands respectively and nude. Her cummer 'Dakini' stands left to her, fair complexion and with existing of 'Tamo Guna' or the natural property of destruction and 'Varnini' stands right to her, with red complexion and conveys the 'Rajo Guna'.

Origin of Goddess Chhinnamasta

About her origin, according to Narada-Pancharatra (Text book dedicated to Narad, the Sage of Gods), once, Parvati (wife of lord Shiva) went to take a bath in "Mandakini" river along with her two cummers. While having a bath in "Mandakini" river, Parvati (wife of lord Shiva) became sexually excited and appeared black. At the same time, her two female cummers or attendants named Jaya and Vijaya, who were also known as "Dakini" and "Varnini" became extremely hungry and urged for food to Parvati. Parvati initially promised to give them something to eat, once they would return to their home in Kalilash Mountain .But, both of them did not have the patience. They complained, that Parvati was the mother of the Universe and her children had full right to demand for everything from their mother.A mother provides her children not only with food, but also with clothing to cover the body. So this was the reason for which they were praying to her for food. Parvati is well known for her mercy, and so she should provide them with food. Since she did not have any thing to give to each of them, the merciful goddess be headed herself with hers word and consequently three streams of blood flowed out of her isolated body. Thus, she gave both of them her two streams of flowing blood to satiate their hunger and one stream she drank by her own.

Another myth related to her origin of Goddess Chhinnamasta, is associated with the Samudra Manthan or Churning of Ocean. One Gods and Demons gathered together to churned the Ocean, to obtain the different gem's, which make powerful to both Gods and Demons. Among those gems, 'Amrit', nectar or elixir is the most significant. Drink of 'Amrit' or Nectar, makes them never-dying and youth. Gods don't want to share with demons, in churning of Ocean, there are eighteen gems come out from Ocean, in which Amrit or Nectar is the last. Doctor of Gods "Dhanwantari" come out with the pot of Nectar. Both Gods and Demons fight together to obtain, Nectar for and what to drink with their community, finally Demon win to take the pot of Nectar with Gods. Meanwhile, Lord Vishnu,manifest himself in the form of a beautiful and charming lady named 'Mohini' praised Adhya-Shakti, to give a power to attract demons and obtain the pot of Nectar from Demons. Incarnation of Lord Vishnu, Mohini attract Demons with her beauty and convinced Demons to divide the Nectar between Gods and Demons, in which Gods first drink. Mohini, served Nectar to all Gods and they drink, at last she give left over Nectar to Adhya-Shakti. As she drink the Nectar and then beheaded herself to prevent them from acquiring it by Demons.

More about Goddess Chhinnamasta

Normally people in Hinduism, don't worship her independently or in homes, because of her dangerous and furious aspect. She is worship rarely in temples also, there are few temples of her. Temples of Goddess Chhinnamasta is in some significant places, which are closely associated with Tantra. There is an ancient temple of her is in Rajrappa, Ramgarh district of Jharkhand state in India, the significance of this place is also described in some text book of Shakti sect in Hinduism. As Kali is worshiped in eastern part of India widely by families on special occasions and significant day. She is worshiped in groups of Dus-Mavidya in publicly organised functions. This kind of functions are widely organised in Eastern part of India, during Durga Puja. But the scholars of Tantra must worship her independently, those who follow the way to be a heroic or 'Vira-Sadhana' she is restricted to worship for these types of scholars only.

In Buddhism she is known and worship as Chhinna-Munda Vajravarahi and Trikaya Vajrayogini. The word Chhinna-Munda, consists of two words, one is Chhinna means isolated and other is Munda means head or without head. According to Buddhism she is the rarest Goddess.
